Catholic Campaign for Human Development

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was created by the U.S. Bishops in 1969 to break the cycle of poverty in the United States.  CCHD has a twofold mandate:  1) to fund low-income controlled projects that will break the cycle of poverty, and 2) to educate Catholics about the root causes of poverty within the context of Catholic Social Teaching.  An annual parish collection occurs the weekend before Thanksgiving and funds both national and local grants.

National Grants

Seventy-five percent of the money collected is sent to the national office to fund two types of grants:  Community Development and Economic Development.  The Eligibility Quiz for these grants is open from September 1 to November 1.  To learn more or to apply, please visit www.usccb.org/cchd.

Local Grants

The remaining 25 percent is used to fund local Community Development and Economic Development grants for organizations within the Diocese of Toledo that are comprised of low income people who want to work to change conditions that cause poverty through grassroots or self-help projects.  Applications are available in January and are due by Wednesday, March 15, 2015 at 5 p.m.  Successful applicants do not need to be affiliated with the Catholic Church but must be in compliance with Catholic moral and social teachings.  Applications are evaluated by the local CCHD committee and recommendations are submitted to Bishop Daniel E. Thomas for approval.
